The lens on your smartphone is already pretty good. You can probably shoot videos in 4K resolution, and take great photos in RAW and JPEG format which are good enough to use in print or online. Why do you need extra lenses?
Smartphone lenses have limits. For example, if you need a wide angle to get a shot your smartphone lens may not be able to deliver for you.
You might need to zoom in on an object, but the digital zoom on smartphones usually distorts (or pixelates) the image. How do you get a cinematic aspect to your video with your smartphone?
Your smartphone lens can only help you to its limits. To take your smartphone photography or videography to a new level you need to use extra lenses.
Here are my recommendations on the best smartphones lenses available:
Moment lenses are, probably, the best smartphone lenses you can buy. Made from high quality materials, including aerospace grade metal and hand-polished glass. Moment lenses give you sharp photos and videos.
In addition to their excellent lenses, Moment makes special cases for Apple, Samsung and OnePlus smartphones. The cases mean the lenses sit well on your standard lens so you get great results. Moment lenses are worth the money if you are serious about your smartphone photography and videography.
Here is the range and suggestions on when to use them:
Moment's Wide 18mm lens is one of the most useful lenses to have with you. It helps you get shots most built-in lenses can't achieve. I use it for photos and videos inside vehicles which are narrow and a wide angle lens gets me the shot.
The Tele 58mm lens helps you get shots where digital zooming will distort the photo. This is useful to have in your kit and gives incredible depth in your shots. Plus, it's great for taking portraits, and close up video shots.
To get the cinematic effect without having to crop a video clip when you edit it, you'll need the Anamorphic lens. This is good lens to have in your kit to add to the variety of shots you can get for your videos, and photos.
For action shots, or for getting buildings into a shot, the Moment 14mm Fisheye lens is ideal. You can capture shots which standard smartphones lenses can't get and it's cheaper than lenses and an action camera. Plus, it gives a much bigger field of view than the lens on your smartphone.
If you do a lot of close-up photography with your smartphone, you will need the Moment Macro lens. It will help you capture detail on your subjects which you won't have been able to do with the lens on your smartphone. The lens comes with a diffuser to even the lighting when up close.
If your budget doesn't yet stretch to Moment lenses, look at the Ulanzi lenses. They have similar types of lens to the Moment range, but they rely on you clipping them to your smartphone for older models, or using a special case for the latest smartphones.
The quality of Ulanzi lenses is not as good as the Moment lenses. But, they will help you get more from your smartphone if you have a tight budget.
Ulanzi's 16mm wide angle smartphone lens has good reviews for photos, and has a clear lens which lessens distortion at its edges. It fits into a clip rather than a case. That said, it has a budget price.
The 65mm Ulanzi telephoto lens fits to your device using a clip too. The lens will help you get closer in to your subjects without using your digital zoom. The clip is aluminium so it should be robust.
Ulanzi's anamorphic lens 17mm fits to your phone using a case instead of a clip, which means it will be a better fit. A better fit means better photos and videos. It's made from aluminium too.
