It used to be hard to create, distribute and promote a podcast. But, smartphones have made recording, editing and distributing a podcast easy.
With some basic kit, a few good apps and a bit of patience, you can create a podcast quickly and easily. Here are some useful apps, accessories and ideas on how to create a podcast.
Anchor is possibly the easiest way to create a podcast, distribute it and then start making money from it. The free service enables you to upload audio files (e.g. MP3) to your account, trim them, add segue music, ads and transitions. It is not as easy to edit files as other apps.
But, its strength is the distribution.
Anchor.FM will distribute your podcast to many podcast services including Spotify, Apple podcasts, Google Podcasts and many more, all for free.
Anchor enables you to record, edit and distribute your podcast episodes using its free app (available on iOS and Android). Although it allows you to record and edit podcast recordings, it is not as easy to do compared with other apps. It is easier to record audio files on your smartphone and edit them with a specialist audio editing app.
Anchor's great strength is how easily it allows you to distribute your podcast across all the major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify. It is easy and quick to do.
The other benefit of Anchor is that you can make money from your podcast via advertisements within your episodes. This only applies to the USA at the moment. But, this will, no doubt, change.
Recording a podcast on your smartphone is easy. The built-in audio recording app on most smartphones is simple to use. And it is easy to export recordings to an audio editing app on your device or a desktop app.
The microphone on your smartphone is usually good if you hold it near to your mouth. But, you get a better, more consistent sound when you use an external microphone.
An external microphone gives you better results, and it is easier to clip the microphone to your lapel. Poor sound quality will put your listeners off, so it's worth investing in a good microphone to help you sound clear and professional.
Don't worry about the cost of an external microphone for your smartphone. You can buy a decent 'lavalier' microphone on eBay or Amazon for less than £10. (See the 'Content Creation Kit' page for recommendations of microphones to use for podcasting).
When you have the microphone, and you are ready to record, it's easier to record in small chunks rather than in one, long take. The audio recording app uses a default description for each audio file you record. You can rename them and categorise the files so you can manage them more easily before you edit them.
You can edit your audio files on your smartphone with an app (see the next section), or export them to a computer to edit with desktop app (see recommendations below). How you choose to edit your audio files depends on your circumstances. Editing on your smartphone is convenient but it can be fiddly. Editing on your computer is more manageable, but importing them from your phone adds more time to the process.
Whatever you do, it's worth taking a course to show you how to create a podcast to save you time and speed up the time it takes to publish and promote it.
AudioLab is a sophisticated audio editing app for Android. It's more than a simpler trimming and cutting audio app. The functions allow you to mix, merge and record audio, as well as convert files to different formats.
More than that, you can change voices and tag files to make it your final cut more searchable.
If you have an iPhone (or iPad) one of the most popular and best reviewed apps is Hokusai Audio Editor. Beyond the basic trim, cut and copy features the app has filters and effects to enhance your final podcast edit.
Editing audio on your desktop computer can be easier. You can be more precise using a mouse and making use of a full screen to see your tracks.
There are numerous audio editing apps available. But, one of the most popular is a free, open-source app called Audacity. It's compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux machines. Best of all, it's free.
Audacity is a fairly easy-to-use application, which allows you to record multi-track audio files. If you need an online audio editor WeVideo is not only good for editing video files. It's good for editing audio files for podcasts too.
Recording audio files is one thing. Learning how to plan, create edit and promote your podcast is another big part of what you need to do to succeed.
Taking a training course to learn how to podcast will help you get up and running quicker. And, a good course will save you time. You will learn how to avoid the pitfalls, and set up strategies and tactics to succeed.
